Cinderella (Ashputtel)
-
The wife of a rich man fell ill; and when she felt that her end was near, she called her only daughter to her bedside and said:
-
"Always be a good girl, and I will look down on you from heaven and watch over you."
-
Soon after, she closed her eyes and died, and was buried in the garden; every day the little girl went to her grave and wept, and she remained always good and kind to everyone around her.
-
The snow fell and spread a beautiful white cover over the grave; but by spring, after the sun had melted it away again, her father had married another woman.
-
This new wife brought along two daughters of her own; they were beautiful of face but evil at heart, and hard times began for the poor little girl.
-
The two sisters said:
-
"What is this useless thing doing in the parlor? Anyone who wants to eat bread must earn it first; off to the kitchen, scullery maid!"
-
Then they stripped her of her beautiful clothes, gave her an old gray dress to wear, mocked her, and drove her out to the kitchen.
-
There she was forced to do hard work; she had to get up early before dawn, carry water, light the fire, cook, and wash.
-
Besides that, the two sisters plagued her in every way and made fun of her.
-
In the evening, when she was tired, she had no bed to lie on, but had to lie down beside the hearth among the ashes; and because this always left her dusty and dirty, they called her "Ashputtel" (the ash-girl).
-
It happened once that the father was going to the market, so he asked his wife's two daughters what he should bring them.
-
The first said:
-
"Fine clothes," and the second exclaimed:
-
"Pearls and diamonds."
-
Then he said to his daughter:
-
"And you, my child, what would you like?"
-
She said, "The first twig that brushes against your hat, dear father, when you turn to come home."
-
So he bought fine clothes, pearls, and diamonds for the first two, as they had asked; and on his way back, as he rode his horse through a green thicket, a hazel twig brushed against his hat so hard it almost knocked it off. He broke it off and took it with him, and when he reached home, he gave it to his daughter.
-
She took it, went to her mother's grave, and planted it there; she wept so much that it was watered with her tears, and there it grew into a beautiful tree.
-
She went to it three times every day and wept; and soon a little bird came and built a nest in the tree, and it would speak to her, care for her, and bring her whatever she wished for.
-
It happened that the king of that land held a celebration that was to last three days, and his son was to choose a bride for himself from among those attending.
-
Ashputtel's two sisters received an invitation to attend; so they called her and said:
-
"Comb our hair, clean our shoes, and fasten our sashes, for we are going to dance at the king's celebration."
-
So she did as she was told; but when all was finished, she could not help weeping, for she longed so much to go to the ball with them; at last she pleaded earnestly with her stepmother to let her go.
-
She said to her, "You, Ashputtel! You who have nothing to wear, no clothes at all, and do not even know how to dance; do you want to go to the ball?"
-
And when she kept on begging, she said at last to get rid of her:
-
"I will throw this dish of beans into the ash heap, and if you can pick them all out within two hours, you shall go to the festival too."
-
Then she threw the beans into the ashes, but the little girl ran out through the back door into the garden, and called out:
-
"To me, to me, across the sky, fly oh pigeons and little birds! Blackbird, thrush, and singing finch, to me, to me, hurry and call! Come all and help me at once! Quick, quick... peck, peck, peck!"
-
First came two white pigeons, flying in through the kitchen window; then came two turtledoves; and after that came all the little birds under heaven, chirping and fluttering, and settled down in the ashes.
-
The little pigeons bowed their heads and set to work, peck, peck, peck; then the others began to peck, peck, peck, peck; and from among the ashes they quickly gathered all the good grains, put them in the dish, and left the ashes behind.
-
And long before the hour was up, the work was completely finished, and they all flew out through the window again.
-
Then Ashputtel brought the dish to her stepmother, overjoyed in the belief that she would now go to the ball.
-
But the stepmother said:
-
"No, no! You insolent girl, you have no clothes, and you cannot dance; you shall not go."
-
And when Ashputtel begged earnestly to go, she said:
-
"If within one hour you can pick two dishes of beans out of the ashes, you shall go as well."
-
And by this she thought she would at least get rid of her.
-
Then she shook out two dishes of beans and poured them into the ashes.
-
But the little girl went out into the garden behind the house, and called out as she had done before:
-
"To me, to me, across the sky, fly oh pigeons and little birds! Blackbird, thrush, and singing finch, to me, to me, hurry and call! Come all and help me at once! Quick, quick... peck, peck, peck!"
-
First came two white pigeons through the kitchen window; then came two turtledoves; and after that came all the little birds under heaven, chirping and hopping about the place.
-
They settled down in the ashes; the little pigeons bowed their heads and set to work, peck, peck, peck; then the others began to peck, peck, peck, peck; and they put all the good grains into the two dishes, leaving the ashes behind.
-
And before half an hour had passed, everything was finished, and they flew outside again.
-
Then Ashputtel took the two dishes to her stepmother, delighted in the belief that she would now go to the ball.
-
But her stepmother said:
-
"All this is of no use, you shall not go; you have no clothes, and you cannot dance, and you will only bring shame upon us": and off she went with her two daughters to the ball.
-
And when everyone had gone and no one was left in the house, Ashputtel went sorrowfully and sat under the hazel tree, and cried out:
-
"Shake yourself, hazel tree, shake yourself, and rain gold and silver over me!"
-
So her bird friend flew down from the tree and brought her a dress of gold and silver, and slippers of silk embroidered with jewels; she put them on and followed her sisters to the ball.
-
But they did not recognize her, and thought she was some foreign princess, for she looked so exceedingly elegant and beautiful in her fine clothes; they never once thought of Ashputtel, feeling certain she was safe at home sitting in the dirt.
-
Soon the king's son came up to her, took her by the hand, and danced with no one else; he would not let go of her hand at all, and whenever anyone came to ask her to dance, he would say:
-
"This lady is dancing with me."
-
They danced until late into the night, at which time she wanted to go home; then the king's son said:
-
"I will accompany you to protect you on your way home"; for he wished to know where the beautiful girl lived.
-
But she slipped away from him without his noticing and ran toward home; and while the prince was following her, she sprang into the pigeon house and shut the door.
-
So the prince waited until her father returned home, and told him that the unknown girl who had been at the ball had hidden in the pigeon house.
-
However, when they broke open the door, they found no one inside; and when they returned to the house, Ashputtel was lying as usual in her dirty clothes beside the ashes, with her dim, dark lamp burning in the chimney.
-
For she had run as fast as she could through the pigeon house to the hazel tree, taken off her beautiful clothes there, laid them under the tree for the bird to carry away, and lain down again among the ashes in her little gray dress.
-
On the next day, when the festival was held again, and after her father, his wife, and the two sisters had gone, Ashputtel went to the hazel tree and said:
-
"Shake yourself, hazel tree, shake yourself, and rain gold and silver over me!"
-
So the bird came and brought a dress even more beautiful than the one she had worn the day before.
-
And when she arrived at the ball wearing it, everyone marvel دور at her beauty; but the king's son, who was waiting for her, took her by the hand and danced with her; and whenever anyone asked her to dance, he said as he had done before:
-
"This lady is dancing with me."
-
And when night came she wanted to go home; so the king's son followed her as he had done before, to see which house she went to; but she suddenly sprang away from him into the garden behind her father's house.
-
In this garden stood a large and beautiful pear tree laden with ripe fruit; and as Ashputtel did not know where to hide, she sprang into it without anyone seeing her.
-
So the king's son lost track of her and could not tell where she had gone, but he waited until her father came back, and said to him:
-
"The unknown lady who danced with me has slipped away, and I think she sprang into the pear tree."
-
Then the father thought to himself:
-
"Could it be Ashputtel?"
-
So he ordered an axe to be brought; and they chopped down the tree, but they found no one in it.
-
And when they went back into the kitchen, Ashputtel was lying among the ashes; for she had slipped down from the other side of the tree, returned her fine clothes to the bird at the hazel tree, and put on her little gray dress.
-
On the third day, when her father, his wife, and the two sisters had gone, she went again to the garden and said:
-
"Shake yourself, hazel tree, shake yourself, and rain gold and silver over me!"
-
So her kind bird friend brought her a dress even more magnificent than the previous ones, and slippers of pure gold; so that when she arrived at the celebration, no one knew what to say, so stunned were they by her beauty; and the king's son danced with no one but her; and whenever someone else asked her to dance, he would say:
-
"This lady is my partner, sir."
-
And when night came, she wanted to go home; and the king's son wanted to go with her, saying to himself:
-
"I will not lose her this time"; but she slipped away from him again, though she was in such a hurry that she dropped her left golden slipper on the stairs.
-
So the prince took the slipper, and the next day went to his father the king, saying:
-
"I will marry the lady whose foot fits this golden slipper."
-
The two sisters were delighted to hear this, for they had pretty feet and did not doubt that they could wear the golden slipper.
-
So the elder sister went first into the room where the slipper was, to try it on, and her mother stood beside her.
-
But her big toe could not get into it, and the slipper was much too small for her foot.
-
Then her mother gave her a knife and said:
-
"Never mind, cut off the toe; for when you are queen you will not care about a toe, and you will not need to walk."
-
So the foolish girl cut off her toe, squeezed her foot into the slipper, and went to the king's son.
-
Then he took her to be his bride, set her beside him on his horse, and rode away with her toward his home.
-
But on their way back, they had to pass by the hazel tree that Ashputtel had planted; and there sat a little pigeon on the branch, singing:
-
"Turn back! Turn back! And look at the shoe! The shoe is too small, and was not made for you! Oh prince! Look again for your bride, for the true one is not sitting by your side!"
-
So the prince looked down at her foot and saw from the blood that was bleeding from it the trick she had played on him.
-
So he turned his horse around and brought the false bride back to her house, saying:
-
"This is not the right bride; let the other sister try on the shoe."
-
So she went into the room and put her foot into the slipper, all except her heel, which was too large.
-
But her mother squeezed it until the blood came, and took her to the king's son; so he set her beside him on his horse as his bride, and rode away with her.
-
But when they reached the hazel tree, the little pigeon was still sitting there, and sang:
-
"Turn back! Turn back! And look at the shoe! The shoe is too small, and was not made for you! Oh prince! Look again for your bride, for the true one is not sitting by your side!"
-
So he looked down and saw that blood was bleeding profusely from the slipper, so much that her white stockings were completely red.
-
So he turned his horse around and brought her back as well.
-
And he said to the father:
-
"This is not the true bride; do you not have any other daughters?"
-
He said, "No, there is only little dirty Ashputtel, the daughter of my first wife; and I am certain she cannot be the bride."
-
So the prince told him to send for her.
-
But the mother said:
-
"No, no, she is far too dirty; she would not dare show herself."
-
Nevertheless, the prince insisted on her coming; so she washed her face and hands first, then came in and curtsied to him, and he handed her the golden slipper.
-
Then she took off the heavy shoe from her left foot, and put on the golden slipper; and it fitted her perfectly, as if it had been made for her.
-
And when he drew near and looked into her face, he recognized her and said:
-
"This is the true bride."
-
But the mother and the two sisters were terrified, and turned pale with anger as he took Ashputtel onto his horse and rode away with her.
-
And when they reached the hazel tree, the white pigeon sang:
-
"Home! Home! Look at the shoe! Oh princess, the shoe was made for you! Oh prince! Take your bride home, for the true one sits by your side!"
-
And when the pigeon had finished its song, it flew down and landed on her right shoulder, and went home with her.
